The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal comprising 572 islands out of which only 36 islands are inhabited. The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar spans a total land area of 8249 square kilometers. Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil are the most spoken languages here. Formerly known as the Kalapani, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands were used as a penal settlement for the people who raised their voices against the atrocities of the Britishers.
